Coca-Cola drink was invented in 1886 in Georgia, USA, by John Stith Pemberton - Confederate veteran and pharmacist who sold his business in 1888 to Asa Candler - American tycoon and founder of the Coca-Cola Company. The original beverage distributed in the late 19th century as a tonic medicine included two main ingredients: coca leaves (3/4) and nuts from tropical kola tree (1/4).

In 1903 after the publication in New York Tribune of a scathing article in which the author claimed that Coca-Cola consumption among blacks is the primary reason of numerous aggressions committed against white population, The Coca-Cola Company replaced unprocessed coca leaves with "spent" coca leaves, which flavored the product without providing any drug effect.
